When the project started in 2007, there was no national, mandatory standard or guidance on how to best plan and build new development so that they might be more socially and environmentally sustainable.
The lead partners approached Wire after working closely with lead strategists and developers for two years on the development of ‘Sustainability Works’ for the Housing Corporation.
After extensive workshops and discussions with commercial developers, local planning officers and lead consultants, Wire developed an online application that allows professionals to register and to perform an immediate assessment on the sustainability of their proposed scheme. They can produce three levels of report that form an integral part of any planning submissions.
Bright and Hove were keen to extend the functionality and to embed the application into their planning system so that the local authority can include and measure sustainable development effectiveness on every development in the area regardless of size of type.
The Checklists are now used extensively in London, The South East, North West, West Midlands, East and South West of England.
