Online placemaking

Newham is one of the most diverse boroughs in London, situated in the traditional East End of London, in 2012 it will be the host borough for the Olympic games.

Newham faced a typical local authority problem. They were seen as a council and not a place. There is no Newham station or Newham town centre and, when asked, people would say they live in ‘West Ham', ‘Stratford' or ‘East London'.

Wire were initially approached to see if there was a way to create a hub bringing together all the activity in the area, to create a ‘sense of place', online, that would work for visitors, local people and businesses.

Our first recommendation was to open the site up to all audiences and to promote the activity of commercial organisations and businesses plus activity surrounding Newham; - a bold move for a local authority. We recommended channelling people according to what they might be interested in, not based on ‘local resident', ‘visitor', ‘business'.

The result is a site that is now attracting ten times the original number of visitors and generating interest from international audiences. is now ready for the next stage of development, a full commercial partnering and advertising strategy.

“Wire have been an absolute pleasure to work with, and I’d like to draw particular attention to their responsiveness, delivery within timescales and budget. Most importantly, their ability to successfully challenge convention and deliver leading design and cutting edge thinking resulted in us having world class product.”
