The London South Bank University, in South East London is one of the largest and ‘vocational' universities in the South East, attracting local and international students from a diverse range of backgrounds and age groups.
Each year, all new students were being sent several pieces of information about their arrival and enrolment at the university. They would receive course-specific information from their individual faculties, legal obligations and essential payment information from central administration. On arrival they might receive additional repeat information. In the worst cases some students received duplicates lacking essential advice - the system was confused. Everything looked different and said different things, it was expensive and environmentally unfriendly.
Wire ran workshops with last year's ‘new' students to get their feedback on what they had received and when. They ran workshops with the heads of all faculties and departments to understand their legal and financial requirements and their critical timings.
As a result, all the information and topic areas was able to be rationalised into one, small, easy-to-use, pocket guide for students. New campus maps and faculty guides were created and the book was sent out as a single piece of essential and useful information.
