Beyond Big Type was created by Wire as a response to the rejection, or lack of understanding by designers and their clients of the important issues on accessibility and communication design.

It takes the form of workshops, talks, a book and online resource. Organisations can also get individual consultancy and advice to ensure that they produce great design without always reverting to the easy, but unsatisfactory, route of a one-size-fits-all standard based around ‘making the type bigger’.

The aim here is to equip designers with an understanding of the issues without restricting their creativity. There is a focus on joint responsibility between the client and the designer and the agenda never loses sight of the fact that everyone deserves good design. Design values such as difference, impact and hierarchy can dramatically improve accessibility if understood and fully embraced.

Inclusive design approaches can lead to innovation and commercial advantage. They can create a positive culture within any organisation and a positive brand image to suppliers, partners and customers.

The most recent event was held in March 2009, hosted at UBS on behalf of the Employers' Forum on Disability in conjunction with Wire.

“I just wanted to say a big thanks, from me, for all the hard work you put in to our workshop yesterday. You really both made the event a real success and your clear enthusiasm on this agenda, and to make it a priority for your business, shone through.”
